Tact switch applications

Mar 03, 2023

The tact switch is a switch which needs a very slight touch to operate. It is often used in applications where the environment can not be disturbed by loud noises, such as with medical equipment or lab environments.

Typically, tact switches are rated as having a contact rating of 0.5A at 24Vdc, so they are best used in low current applications. They are commonly used for momentary circuits, requiring only a brief activation before being reset. The switch can be designed to actuate with a finger, a soft tipped tool, or a metal rod – each of which have different activation pressures. These switch motion types do not require a metal ground connection to function.

The tact switches are also simple to install, which is why they are quite popular in a number of industrial and consumer applications. They are also inexpensive option as compared to other available switches, such as a toggle switch or a tactile switch. Finally, the flexibility offered by light touch switches – for instance, being able to mount it and set the activation pressure as per our requirements – makes them an attractive solution for a variety of operations.
